DCL 3-1a Code of Ethics – All Library Employees
We provide the highest level of service to all library users through appropriate and usefully organized resources; equitable service policies; equitable access; and accurate, unbiased, and courteous responses to all requests.
We uphold the principles of intellectual freedom and resist all efforts to censor library resources.
We protect each library user’s right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted.
We treat co-workers and other colleagues with respect, fairness and good faith, and advocate conditions of employment that safeguard the rights and welfare of all employees of our library system.
We do not advance private interests at the expense of library users, colleagues, or our employing institutions.
We distinguish between our personal convictions and professional duties and do not allow our personal beliefs to interfere with fair representation of the aims of our institutions or the provisions of access to their information resources.
We strive for excellence in the profession by maintaining and enhancing our own knowledge and skills, by encouraging the professional development of potential members of the profession.
Employee work policy:
Employees are expected to manage their personal affairs in a manner, which will enable them to report to work on time and in a regular and dependable fashion. We recognize that there may be situations beyond an employee’s control that cause absences from work. To the extent possible, employees are expected to minimize the absences related to unanticipated absences.
All employees are expected to notify the director as far in advance as possible of expected absences from work, expected duration of the absence and expected return to work information, and any other information that would have an impact on work schedules during the employee’s absence.
All employees must report their unscheduled absences to the Director. Unless an emergency situation dictates otherwise, messages may not be left by third parties (i.e. friends, relatives, coworkers, etc.), text messages are not acceptable.
All employees are expected to provide documentation to support sick leave usage, when an extended length of time is anticipated.
